SMART Spelling - WEEK 4 (5/8/20)
Information for Parents
SMART Spelling is the approach we use in 1/2A to learn how sounds work together to create words. We are focussing on identifying graphs and digraphs.
Graphs are what we call one letter that only makes one sound e.g. /s/ /f/ /l/ and /b/ all only make one single sound, so when you see these when reading or writing, you know that there is only one sound that is mapped to these letters.
Digraphs are two letters that work together to create one sound e.g. /ch/ /sh/ /th/ and /ng/ are all spelled using two letters, but when we say them out loud we are only creating one sound.
When applying this knowledge, students are more readily able to decode unfamiliar words by analysing the make-up of the word and identifying known graphs and digraphs. This increases their ability to spell a wider variety of words, as well as decode unfamiliar words when reading more challenging texts.
