                           Welcome to our Reading block!
Please see below the reading strategy students are encouraged to work on when reading their right fit readers.

Parents:
  • Please encourage your child to actively use their reading strategies to solve unknown words.
  • Please read the Parent Pipeline below to support your understanding of this important reading strategy.

Information for Parents
Specific books have not been assigned to these activities as each child reads at their own level and as such they are best selecting their own right fit readers. I can however offer you some extra suggestions below if you have limited books at home.
  1. Reading Eggspress offers a library of online books. Great for providing a variety of Fiction and Non-Fiction options to your children.
  2. Log on and use Epic! each student as their own profile and can choose from a huge variety of books.
  3. You can read aloud to your child/ or share the reading with your child, if the text is too hard for them to read and get them to retell the story based on their understanding of what they heard.
  4. Lights Down Reading: This website offers books that are being read aloud for your child to listen to. There are many other books read aloud on YouTube also. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCi5cgj8aeKJ9BEVf3okW_Wg.
  5. Open Library is a free resource that you can loan books online to read. Please note you do have to sign up using an email address. https://openlibrary.org/search?q=kids&mode=ebooks&has_fulltext=true.
  6. This is a phonics-based website that offers free pdf books focused on certain phonemic sounds. https://www.speld-sa.org.au/services/phonic-books.html

Additional Reading Activities
  • Nightly Reading is still strongly encouraged as this allows them to continue to practise their decoding skills.
  • For those parents looking to provide additional reading opportunities to their children I would encourage your child to continue to log onto reading eggs and complete their spelling tasks.

Star Criteria
  • I am asking that students self-assess (with their parents help at times if needed) how many stars they think they were working at for each lesson. They might like to draw these at the bottom of their work as a reminder for when they touch base with myself (e.g. if worked at one start, draw one star on their work).
